What makes stair recapping a favorable choice?

Choosing stair recapping is a smart way to give your stairs a fresh look without spending too much or causing a lot of disruption. It’s cost-effective, doesn’t mess with the walls or structure, and keeps the stairs accessible during the upgrade. With various design options available, it’s a quick and convenient choice for those wanting an affordable and efficient improvement while keeping everything running smoothly.

How does stair recapping work?

To start recapping stairs, we first remove the existing handrail, spindles, posts, carpet, and trim. Each step is measured with a template to make custom-sized replacements. After cutting the nosing, we do most of the painting and staining on-site. Finally, we install the new treads, risers, trims, and add the finishing touches to complete the process.

How much time does stair recapping usually require to finish?

The stair recapping process typically takes around 4-5 days to finish. Throughout this timeframe, we prioritize a comprehensive cleanup to ensure a neat and tidy outcome.

Why Choose Us?

With a solid presence in the stair renovation industry since 2009, Empire Stairs has consistently delivered excellent service to clients in the Greater Toronto Area and surrounding regions. Before starting the stair recapping process, clients can choose from Canadian Red Oak, Maple, or other exotic hardwoods for their stairs. We utilize custom templates to manufacture treads and trims that perfectly fit the stairs. Stain and finishing are meticulously matched in our warehouse, with client approval before application.

Key Features

When it comes to selecting stair materials, not all options are created equal. We’ve thoroughly explored this matter to ensure your decision is well-informed and guided by professional insights. The key qualities of superior stair materials include:

Purpose

Transition from carpet to hardwood on a staircase.

Process

Adds a layer of new material (often solid hardwood) over existing stairs, covering treads and risers.

Customization

Offers various options for wood type, finish, and decorative elements.

Cost

Generally more cost-effective than a full staircase replacement but can still be a significant investment, especially with high-end materials.

Disruption

Involves less disruption compared to full replacement – quicker, requires less demolition, and is cleaner and faster compared to refinishing.

Stages of Stair Recapping

When it comes to selecting stair materials, not all options are created equal. We’ve thoroughly explored this matter to ensure your decision is well-informed and guided by professional insights. The key qualities of superior stair materials include:

What is stair recapping, and when is it suitable ?

Stair recapping replaces treads, risers, and trim while preserving the structure — ideal when the substructure is sound but the surface needs refreshing.

Do I need a building permit to replace or renovate stairs in Ontario?

In Ontario, a building permit is required when stair work alters structure, egress, or load-bearing elements. Cosmetic recapping often doesn't, but always confirm with your municipality and the Ontario Building Code.

What’s the difference between stair recapping and refinishing?

Recapping replaces treads, risers, and trim with new materials for a fresh look; refinishing sands and recoats existing wood. Recapping suits damaged or style-change jobs, while refinishing is quicker and more budget-friendly.

How can I ensure my renovated stairs meet safety and code requirements?

Ask your contractor to verify Ontario Building Code compliance: riser/run limits, handrail heights (865–965mm), baluster spacing (<100mm), slip-resistant treads and nosing contrast, plus permits. Request measurements, documentation, and inspection sign-off.

How much should I budget for stair recapping or full replacement in Canada?

In Canada, costs vary: simple stair recapping often starts around CAD$1,500–$3,500, while full replacement or custom designs commonly exceed CAD$10,000. Ask for an itemized quote covering materials, labour, and finishes.

Can stair recapping fix squeaky or creaky stairs?

Yes—recapping can silence squeaks if the sub-structure is stable. Proper prep includes fastening loose treads and adding adhesive under new caps. However, if structural issues exist, full replacement may be needed.

How long will a recapped staircase last compared with a full replacement?

A well-executed recapping using quality hardwood can last 10–20 years or more, depending on traffic and care. It doesn’t match the lifespan of a full structural replacement, but it offers great value.

What kinds of stairs are not suitable for recapping?

Stairs with major structural damage, badly warped stringers, large rise/run inconsistencies, or non‐wood substrates may be unsuitable for recapping and may instead require full replacement. Assessment is key.

How disruptive is stair recapping for daily household use?

Recapping is minimally disruptive: most straight stairs can be transformed within 1–3 days, with access maintained. Curved or custom stairs may take longer—but still far quicker than full replacement.

Does stair recapping require changing railings or balusters?

Not necessarily, but upgrading railings or balusters during recapping is common for aesthetic cohesion. If sizes change significantly (tread depth, riser height), handrail mountings may need adjustments too.

Can stair recapping increase my home’s resale value?

Yes, stair recapping can noticeably boost your home’s resale appeal. A modern, elegant staircase enhances first impressions and complements interior design—offering a high return on investment at a lower cost than full replacement.

Is stair recapping a durable, long-term solution?

Yes, stair recapping is highly durable when done with quality materials like hardwood or engineered wood. It provides the same lifespan as new stairs, especially when installed by skilled professionals and maintained properly.

Can stair recapping fix squeaky or uneven steps?

Stair recapping can reduce squeaks if the issue is surface-level, but severe squeaking or unevenness may require tightening or repairing the underlying structure before recapping for the best results.

Does stair recapping require removing the existing staircase?

No, the existing staircase stays in place. Recapping is installed over your current steps, making it a faster and less invasive renovation option compared to full stair replacement.

Can I mix materials when recapping stairs?

Yes, you can mix materials like hardwood treads with painted risers or textured finishes. Combining materials allows full customization and helps match your staircase to your home’s interior design style.
